28% GST on online gaming: All the key announcements from GST council meeting

India’s GST Council confirmed that it would levy a 28% tax on the value of online games from October, but not on gross gaming revenue or supplier platform fees. The levy would be applicable to amounts paid, payable or deposited with the supplier by players and exclude winnings. The minister of finance, Nirmala Sitharaman, confirmed that the government would review the rules in six months and could consider changes in April 2022. The legislation stipulated that offshore gaming sites must register themselves with the authorities or face blocking under Information Technology Act provisions.
