How an AI pilot beat three ‘champion’ drone racers

Researchers from the University of Zurich and Intel have developed an AI system called Swift, which beat human champions at drone racing. The system was trained in a simulated environment using reinforcement learning. Unlike previous autonomous drones, Swift reacted in real time to data collected by an onboard camera, allowing it to compete with human racers. Swift achieved the fastest lap, but human pilots proved to be more adaptable in different conditions.
